A Japanese prefecture is a political entity much like a state in the U.S. There are 47 prefectures of Japan. Hokkaido is the northernmost while Okinawa is the southernmost. Okinawa is also the the poorest of Japan’s 47 prefectures, with the lowest average income and the highest levels of unemployment.
