Nunti

Not a Fisherman’s Gaff

ヌンティー

While it looks something like a fisherman’s gaff, the nunti did not originate from the fishermen of Okinawa.  The nunti was introduced into Okinawa from China about 600 years ago.  In China, it was used from horseback to pull riders off of their horses.  The nunti is wielded like a Japanese spear.

Nunti Kata

Kōbu no Nunti

Kōbu no Nunti is the only kata for nunti. Kōbu no Nunti is a variation of Chiken no Kon, an advanced bō kata. The hand switching technique of Kōbu no Nunti is designed to keep the most effective end, the manji sai end, always forward for hooking, pulling and piercing. The opposite end can be used like a bō.
